Postgraduate degree in Industrial Chemistry (M.Sc. IC)

Masters of Science (Industrial Chemistry) is a two year post graduate programme conducted by ITM Vocational University, Vadodara. The curriculum contains four semesters divided into two years. The last semester (4th semester) of this course is for industrial internship/in house dessertation in which students have to compulsorily opt for six months internship/dessertation at any of the industry/company related to Industrial Chemistry which is provided by ITMVU or inhouse at the ITMVU campus. Following this, students have to present their six months progress report in the form of internship report or dessertation thesis.

Students who want to opt for this course should have Bachelors degree in Sciences/ Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry with a considerable score and ranking.

About the content of the course

Subjects taught in this course are aimed to explore the research based mindset of the students so as to enhance their chemical based skills. Special emphasis is given on methodological approaches to study old, new and unknown chemical compounds and their use in formation of products which are of industrial importance. Clinical research, name reactions in chemical industry, process development, petrochemical and pharmaceutical technologies, natural product chemistry, advanced analytical analysis and process control are the core subjects which we take up in this course. Besides this, the course contains subjects such as industry safety management and intellectual property rights which are specifically oriented at developing skill based education by encompassing practical knowledge of safety and protection of intellectual property rights from industrial point of view.
We at Industrial Chemistry department not only focus on theoretical teaching but also on development of professional skills so that our students are ready to venture in the professional world with utmost confidence and valour. Professional communication skills is the subject specifically incorporated to develop such skills.

We aim to produce sound professionals who are able to work in close coordination with the industry as chemists and researchers. The aim is to help them sustain the ever evolving environment of the industry.

Pedagogy

Our pedagogy method involves research and practical based learning where we focus extensively on 60% of practical sessions and 40% of theoretical teaching. Assignments, group discussions, simulations, expert lectures from eminent industry persons, seminars, student presentations, industrial visits, continuous assessment, project based learning are some additional pedagogy methods which the department of industrial chemistry uses for result based approach and outcome.

Focus on blended learning is emphasized. We focus on blended learning using the above mentioned teaching and pedagogy methods. One of the most important aspect of our department is the industrial visits wherein we focus on the practical implications of courses taught in classrooms.Students are provided assignments where conceptual questions related to their course structure is asked. The students then use their theorectical knowledge as a way of problem solving. Group discussions also form an important part of the pedagogy where the students interact with each other to share their knowledge about the industry. Six months internship at masters level makes the students industry ready for their professional aspects. The department uses Theorectical, Experimental and Practical orientation for overall development of the students as sound chemists.

Project Based Learning Approach

Project-Based Learning focuses on real solutions to a problem. Once a problem is identified, student teams develop and demonstrate their understanding of the problem by proposing one or more solutions. The focus is on building students’ ability to develop creative, realistic, tangible solutions to sometimes difficult problems through teamwork. Once a solution is agreed upon, the team must decide how to realize that solution with a product or service. When completed, teams may present their solution to the class or in a demo session to a broader audience.Frequently combined, problem-based, project-based, and team-based learning are well-established teaching techniques at the University. All are collaborative and involve active learning. Student teams may be interdisciplinary and, with online technologies, globally distributed. Problems may have local or global significance, and in some cases are provided by hospital/ clinical or other partners.

Open Elective, Swayam/MOOCs

This provides students with an option to select subjects from domain outside of Industrial Chemistry. This is in view of the transformation of current scenario from core-subject aspect to a more generalized approach of interdisciplinary. Swayam/MOOCs are aimed at encouraging students to take up certification courses which shall add additional value and skills to their knowledge.

Peer Learning Activity

One of the important aspects of Industrial Chemistry Department at ITMVU is peer learning activity wherein students who excel in academics are provided with oppurtunity to teach and train their peers. This is an intresting way to develop the skills of the students and increase knowledge sharing.

About faculty at the Department

Faculty of Industrial Chemistry Department are highly qualified with most of them possessing Doctoral degree in Chemistry. They have research publications in high impact journals such as ACS, RSC, Springer, Elsevier to name a few. This adds advantage to the students as they deliver reserach oriented teaching to the students.

We make sure that our students receive 100% placement with attractive package at the end of our two years course.

Career perspectives after M.Sc. IC Course

After this course, students can work in a vast variety of industries such as agrochemicals, polymer industries, petrochemical industries, refineries, water purification plants, defense research laboratories to name a few. Chemistry Content Writer, Scientific Data Entry Specialist, Chemical Business Analyst, Taxonomist, Chemist, Synthetic Chemistry Scientist, Scientist, Quality Assurance Officer, Biochemistry Assistant Scientist can be there designated roles. They can also pursue teaching and research as their career in colleges, universities and research organizations.

Salary after M.Sc. IC Course

Salary of an industrial chemist can vary widely depending upon the field of work. As a fresher it is possible to earn more than 2.5 lacs per annum as a starting salary.

We at the Department of Industrial Chemistry invite you to visit our campus and explore the endless world of oppurtunities at our department and ITMVU.
