Wellness Conference in ITM Kharghar on 19th February’2010
“Towards the Wellness of Body, Mind and Self” – Alternative Therapies & Lifestyle Revisited It was indeed a very knowledgeable session, which came alive for the students, faculties, guests and the participants in the premises of ITM Business School, Kharghar, this Friday morning. A whole day session was scheduled to spread a few words of health management and concern for wellness. It was aptly titled as “Towards the Wellness of Body, Mind and Self” – Alternative Therapies & Lifestyle Revisited”. There were eminent speakers from various AIIMS, healthcare industry, educational institutes, and reputed medical colleges. The conference was organized by Institute of Science and Religion, Navi Mumbai in association with ITM Kharghar. The inaugural session began with an introduction about the conference and then the dignitaries inaugurated the conference by lighting the auspicious lamp. Following the ceremony, Dr. C.S.Adhikari, Dean Academics, ITM Business School, Kharghar addressed the audience and shared his views about holding the event for management students. He also mentioned that ITM was the first business school in 2003, which started Yoga-Lifestyle Management as a full credit course for MBA first year. Dr. Jayanthi Chavan, President, Institute of Science and Religion, Navi Mumbai also shared her wisdom by giving a glimpse of the elements that make the human entity, with the audience. Prof. (Dr.) Ravindra Bapat, Vice-Chancellor, MGM University of Health Sciences, Navi Mumbai, who was the Chief Guest for the day, did a wonderful job in shattering myths about modern science. He also stated the fact that no science can remain in the society, if it is not useful to the society. He said that we Indians are reluctant to show respect to our own heritage viz. Yoga and Ayurveda, unless they are whetted by the Western World. Dr. Mukhopadhyay, AIIMS, New Delhi talked about ‘The Psyche of Health’ and minted a term called ‘supracortical consciousnesses. He also talked about human sub-conscious mind, factors governing it and disharmony in the sub-conscious resulting in psychometric disorders. He aptly mentioned that we are indeed enslaved by information. He gave a very intellectually stimulated and thoroughly riveting thought of concern. A fundamental learning from the session was that modern man has lost touch with his inner self and forgot to live in harmony with nature, being bombarded with information overload, caught in the never-ending race. Tide of the modern age can’t be reversed but we definitely have a choice of either creating a room for our true self inside us and nurture it with contemplation and silence, or burn ourselves caught in the web of a very chaotic modern life. Prof. Bhavsar presented a token of remembrance to Dr. Mukhopadhyay and also concluded the inaugural session. The first session after the inaugural session was related to Health Basics, where we had a dynamic speaker Dr. John T Eapen from M.E Eapen Institute of Science and Technology for Community Development, (MEEISATCODE), Dahanu Road, Maharashtra. The second session was related to “Yoga and Alternative Lifestyle”. Prof. Arjun Naik, Faculty, ITM Business School spoke about the basics and the benefits of Yoga along with a focus on sharing the therapies of Yoga to cure disorders in a cost-effective way, on national and individual level. Another speaker who discussed various Yoga Therapeutic Practices was Dr. Ulka Natu, Gynecologist from Seth.G.S.Medical College, Parel Mumbai. The after lunch session was conducted by another high-minded personality from AIIMS. Dr. Rama Jayasundar, who presented a big picture of Ayurveda and also talked about some of the basic Sanskrit terms, which focused on maintaining the simplicity of daily life. According to her, we all should be aware of the Therapeutic approach to Ayurveda, Yoga, Self, diet and activities. According to her, aim of Ayurveda is not only confined to the absence of diseases, rather it focuses on maintaining good health and cure of diseases. Another speaker for the session was Mr. M.Krishnan, State Bank Of India. He shared his valuable views on “Reiki- Holistic Healing for Positive Living”. It was an interesting session as he spoke about the dimensions being covered by Reiki to reduce stress, relax mind, heal, and increase goal consciousness and much more. He also mentioned that anyone and everyone can become a Reiki master by learning it but he must have a zeal and patience towards the procedure of cure. Mr. S. Milliander, NACIL India, enlightened his audience by sharing his views on Pranic Healing, which works on two laws of Self Recovery and Life Energy. He also gave certain practices of Pranic Psychotherapy. He also mentioned very clearly that Pranic Psychotherapy does not replace medicine; rather it is complimentary and supplementary to it. The last session for the day was a panel discussion on one of the burning topics of today i.e. “Promoting Healthy Life Style is Need of the Hour”. Prof. Dr. B.B. Shrivastava chaired it. All the speakers gave simple and effective ways for the younger ones to improve upon their daily lifestyle and stress related queries. To wind up, the daylong session provided a bag full of learning’s, simple practices, Natural therapies and much more for everyone who was the part of audience. The programme concluded with lot of vibrant and positive energy and by a valedictory speech by Dr. B.B. Shrivastava.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP AT ITM
“Whenever a man turns he can find someone who needs him”. Perhaps this was the inspiration behind the success of the Blood Donation Camp organized at ITM, Navi Mumbai on 15th December 2009. The camp was a combined effort of the Think Foundation, an NGO based in Mumbai and the Community Social Initiative (CSI) Committee of the Institute together with the Rotractors of Navi Mumbai Sunrise. Think Foundation is involved in organizing blood donation camps since last 25 years and is an active participant in the awareness campaign for Thalassemia since last 3 years. Dr. Vinay Shetty, the Vice President of the Think Foundation oversaw the drive.
As many as 150 students, faculty members and staff of the institute donated blood voluntarily and about 160 students, faculty members and staff underwent test for Thalassemia, free of cost. The camp saw huge participation from students. The blood was donated to two of the local hospitals –Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Hospital & Sarvoday hospital, Samarpan. To recognize the contribution of donors they were given batches and certificates.
It is estimated that about 6 crore people in India carry the traits of Thalassemia. Further , against an annual requirement of approximately 5.0 million units of blood, only 3.5 million units of blood is actually available to patients across India.
Such a concept of organizing Blood Donation Camps can also be extended to commercial institutions , which would not only help in minimizing the demand-supply gap of blood in India but would also help in generating awareness about a dreaded disease like Thalassemia as it is rightly said that “In about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy”.
